This page should provide access to about a thousand field drawings, maps and diagrams of Valkenburg.
However, due to the large size of this collection, and the size of the individual drawings
(some of them several Mb) it was decided to put this collection NOT on the www. For research purposes
they are available on CD through the
webmaster.
To give an idea of the images, the drawings of site Id are available. Options 'Misc.' and
'All' are disabled. Note that the size of the drawings of site Id is 360-630 Kb.
Use the upper part of this page to select which images you want to see.
The following options are available:
Enter a find number and push the button
.
You can use the and buttons to de/increase the find numbers value to search for.
When the find number is not on any of the images then the system will show the two nearest find numbers,
one lower and one higher,
that are available on at least one image, and will automatically replace the find number that you entered by
the nearest one.
It is also possible to query a certain Level. The level is expressed as meters, relative to
the official dutch NAP ('Nieuw Amsterdams Peil') level. The range is from +2.50 to -2.0 approximately.
Note that entering a find number will disable this option: specifying a find number
prevails over specifying a level.
It is also possible to query for a certain site. Use the drop down box to choose one.
Note that entering a find number or a level will disable this option: specifying a find number
or a level prevails over specifying a site. NOTE: Only site Id available!
Alternatively, you can use the to access the Valkenburg map and indicate the
site by clicking on the map. On the map there is a drop-down box to assist you to find a certain site
on the map. Note, however, that not all sites are on the map.
Use the button to get a list of the not directly site-related drawings and prints.
Typical examples are overview drawings of the whole area, drawings of wooden constructions etc.).
NOTE: Disabled!
The button gives a complete list of all available site-related images.

Use the button to clear the input fields.
After the search, the lower part of the screen displays the query results in table format.
The format of this table is as follows:

Wooden construction
The upper part of the table shows the sections ("profielen") (if any).
In the first column the site code (codes) are displayed.
The second colum shows the section codes and their orientation (e.g. SN south to north, EW east to west).
Many (but not all) section codes can be found on the Valkenburg map.
The third column shows find numbers. When this field is empty then there are no find numbers
on the image. The final column shows relevant remarks.
The lower part of the table shows the horizontal drawings ("vlaktekeningen") (if any). Instead of
the section code, the level is displayed. When this field is empty then the level is unknown.
Often these are detail drawings of e.g. wooden constructions or a part of a floor.
The first item on each row is a button. Using these
push buttons will provide a scaled-down image in a separate window. You do not
have to close this window before opening another image (unless the memory of your PC is not
sufficient, see later). This window has a floating button panel with the following functionality:
Start anew. Rescale the image to the initial size.
Hide the button panel. A small red square indicates the panel. Clicking the square
will make the panel reappear.
Enlarge the image 30%. The center of the image will stay in the same place.
Decrease the the size of the image 30%. The center of the image will stay in the same place.
Enlarge the image to its '100%' size. It is usually
advisable also to maximise the window to obtain an optimal view.
Hide the information displayed above the image. Or make it reappear. This is useful
when there are many findnumbers preventing a good view of the image.
Display the filename of the image. All image are .jpg files, stored in the
/Drawings directory.
Close the window. Alternatively, you can close the window in the usual way by
clicking the X in the upper right hand corner of the window.
Codes
From the 'site' drop-down box it is immediately clear that there is a slight problem with the overall
site administration. For example, there are two sites IX, two sites X, two sites XI etc. To distinguish such two sites,
the code for the most recent excavation was rebaptised by adding a year indicator to the site number
(resulting in e.g. IX and IX48, X and X46, XI and XI49 etc.) Note however that the images themselves do not
bear these 'extended codes'.
An additional problem is the usage of single, double and triple quotes (which are sometimes not on the
drawings) and the the introduction of new codes for existing sites and sections (e.g. the site
"west of Jansen" was rebaptised into site XIV, and site I"' is aka Ia").
A second coding problem concerns the sections: the section codes
are no unique identifiers. As an example consider section N-1 (NS). This section can be found in sites IIe, IIcd, IIb
and IIa. The original drawings, however, often lack the site code, so it often is very hard to
link a certain drawing of a section to a site. The rationale behind this coding system is unclear.
Apparantly the notion that a section, a part of a section and a drawing are three different entities
that entail different information was not understood.
Sources
Most of the images are high-resolution scans of black and white pictures from the
original field drawings. These pictures are at the archives of the AAC (UvA), the former IPP.
Some color images (notably from sites VIc and VId) were created from series of digital color
photographs of the original drawings. A third source is comprised by the images from the original publications
of Van Giffen (1948, 1955).
Problems
You may encounter problems when you PC has not enough memory and/or processing power. The message
'Could not scale picture. Please retry...' will appear, and the image displayed will be scaled to 740 x 520
pixels, usually resulting in a distorted view. The '100%' button will not work either. In this case, close the
message box and push the same image button again. The image will appear as it should. However, navigating through the
picture might become slow. Also, zooming in using the selection rectangle may cause trouble.
These problems are bound to appear with the large images. The largest files are the color images of
sites VIc/VId. It helps to close other programs, and sometimes a re-start of the PC may help (temporarily).
The only real solution is an investment into state-of-the-art hardware.
