This page offers you the following features:

  • You can have your flagon data analysed and let the system determine the corrsponding flagon type(s)
  • You can search flagons matching the data entered
  • You can compare your data with those in the database to see which flagons fit best

NOTE: You can always call this page by clicking the Romans in the upper lefthand corner.

In the upper half of the search page you see two drop down lists, six data entry fields, four push buttons and a check box.
The two drop down lists enable you to choose a specific flagon type and/or a specific rim type. The rim types available are:

If you do not want to limit yourself to a specific type or rim type then you can ignore these list. The default is 'All Flagon Types' and 'All Rim Types'.

Then there are six data entry fields. Here you can enter values of flagon properties which are important to distinguish between the different flagon types. These properties are:

rr Number of Ribs of Ring. Usually 1. More than seven does not occurr.
nm Distance between Minimum Diameter of Neck <-> Ring. This value ranges from zero to 65 millimeters
bx Maximum Diameter of Body. Values range from 76 to 321 millimeters
ai Inner Diameter of Foot Ring. Values range from 20 to 105 millimeters
sf (Height of Flagon)/(Maximum Diameter of Body) This is a ratio and typical values are in the range 0.9 - 1.5
sh (Maximum Diameter <-> Base) / (Height of Body) This is a ratio and typical values are in the range 0.2 - 0.7. As the height of the body is always greater than the height of the maximum diameter, this value is always smaller than 1 (one).

When certain data are not available the data entry field remains empty.

After having entered the data, three pushbuttons are available. First of all, the 'Analyse' button. Push the button. The data entered are compared with the data in the database. One by one the properties are matched. If a value is outside the range for a particular flagon type, then a message may be printed that the data entered do not correspond with this particular type. The last line displays any possible flagon types left. If you want to see the individual comparisons then check the 'More Details' box, otherwise only the final conclusion is printed. Note that specifying a particular type, using the drop down list, is ignored as there is no point in analysing your data when the type is already known.

Next there is the Search button. Choose a specific type from the drop down list and push the bottom. All available pictures of the type(s) found are shown, with at their right side their keys. You may enter '>', '<', '>=' and '<=' when using the Search option. For example, enter '>3' or '>=3' in the 'Number of Rim Rings' field and push 'Search'.

Finally, you can Match your data against the flagons in the database. Your data are compared and a measure of difference is calculated. The 12 flagons with the smallest difference are shown. Do not enter '>', '<', '>=' or '<=' when using the Match option.

You can now change the data and repeat the search. Use the 'Reset' button to clear all fields.
