Stratigraphy


At the left Prof. Van Giffen explains the stratigraphy of the Valkenburg sites. Especially the demolition layer of phase 3 is an important feature, covering the whole castellum. To facilitate the difficult task to unravel the puzzle of the overlapping traces, the excavators assigned each phase a colour. This resulted in the 'ideal stratigraphy' as shown below. The colours have been consistently used in all the drawings of the surfaces and profiles. See for example the Finds page.
